Most meters are Standard: this means that they measure your overall electricity and gas usage, and every now and then you need to tell your utility company one reading for Gas and Electricity each. Based on this your monthly rate is calculated.
If you need to give meter readings, and you give one number for gas, and one number for electricity, then you most likely have a standard meter.
Dual, or Economy 7 Meters work similar to standard meters, yet instead of measuring electricity in 1 total amount, it splits consumption into Day and Night. As a result, your energy provider will charge you differently for day and night usage of electricity.
Smart Meters can work with either Standard or Dual tariffs, give you more detailed information on your energy usage, and send information to your energy provider automatically so you don’t have to do a meter reading. Smart meters from the company 'Secure' work with Octopus Energy, but for others, your in-house display might not work and you will still have to send meter readings. Smart Thermostats - A smart meter is not the same as a smart thermostat (e.g. 'Hive'). A smart thermostat only enables you to change your temperature, and gives you information on the temperature in your house. These are not affected by your energy provider.
